Year 6

Welcome Year 6 to a new and exciting school year!

We are so happy to be back in school and enjoying learning! It has been fantastic to see excellent atttitudes towards learning shown by the children.

This year, we will be focusing primarily on core skills of reading, writing and maths in order to minimise any impact on childrens' education from last term's school closures.

During our shared reading sessions we will be focusing on key skills such as fact retrieval, inference and prediction. We will be doing this through sharing excting texts such as The Arrival by Shaun Tan.

The Arrival

In addition to our daily shared reading sessions, children will be given regular opportunities to read books both as a class and independently. As you may already know, we are encouraging a reading challenge this year. We have shared with the children a recommended list of 100 books to try to read before the end of Year 6. This list can be found below.

Childrern are encouraged to access Accelerated Reader once they have completed a book to access a quiz on the book. Accelerated Reader can be accessed via the useful links below.

In English, during our first term, we will be looking at two incredible books. Rose Blanche by Roberto Innocenti and Anne Frank by Josephine Poole.

Rose Blanche Anne Frank

We will be using these beautifully written (and illustrated) texts to inspire our own writing and this term we will be producing a Diary and a Bravery Award Speech.

To begin with, the focus of our daily Power Maths lessons will be number. We will be looking at place value, rounding, comparing numbers and negative numbers. Please support your child in accessing the online platforms of Mathletics and Times Table Rock Stars for their homework. Links can be found below.

We have a weekly 'Battle of the Bands' that takes place between all three Year 6 classes. This has proved extremely popular and motivating so far. The winners of the weekly Battle of the Bands will be announced in the weekly update emails.

What are we learning?

  • PE takes place on Mondays and Thursdays. Children should come to school in their PE kit, including appropriate footwear and an outdoor jacket. Uniform will not be required on these days.
  • Please encourage and support your child to complete their Mathletics homework by Sunday each week. In addition to Mathletics, due to the importance of times table knowledge to the year 6 maths curriculum, we have asked the children to complete a minuimum of 5 garage sessions per week (each session lasts 1 minute).
  • Weekly Spellings will be shared in the weekly update email on a Thursday. These spellings will be tested on the following Friday. The spellings will be taken from the year 5/6 statutory spelling list which can be found in the documents section below.
  • Please encourage your child to read at home everyday.
